Tikal National Park shelters more than 3,000 structures across 575 square kilometres of lowland rainforest, yet fewer than fifteen percent have been excavated since systematic work began in the 1950s. The forest itself — designated a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1990 — sustains 285 bird species, five cat species, and the largest remaining population of ocellated turkeys in Central America. Morning light filters through kapok and ceiba canopies, illuminating the limestone temples in graduated amber tones that shift as the sun clears the horizon.
